Opposite Menaggio is Varenna. Varenna was built on a rock at the foot of Lake Como mountains. Varenna originated in the fifth century, has a Roman layout plan of the town that allows stunning views of the lake. Varenna was known for its black marble. Well worth seeing Villa Monastero from the 13 th Century with its beautiful garden opened to to the public, and Villa Crespi with its terraced garden. Luxury hotels are often closed from October to the second half of March. Near Varenna try not to miss the Sanctuary of Lezzano.
